Trip #18 Sandia Crest
Here's a trivia question for you geography freaks. What is the oldest capital city still in existence in the United States? Read on and you'll find the answer.
Mountainous terrain, rich Spanish and Native American art and architecture unite and invite you to this New Mexico adventure. Start your tour leisurely along the mountain path of the Turquoise Trail. This trail, also known as the Ghost Town Trail, links Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Linked together along the Turquoise Trail are three communities, once rich in minerals, now rich with artists, museums and restaurants. Madrid was once a ghost town until revived in the early 70's by artists and craft persons. Golden is the oldest mining district in New Mexico. Cerrillos houses one of the last unspoiled villages of the West. Due to this unique quality, thirteen different movies have been filmed here.
Challenging and breathtaking rides continue through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This mountain range is the highest in New Mexico. We will be biking along the Enchanted Circle. This circle route goes through Carson National Forest. A dip down into Monterio Valley opens up to a view of the highest mountain in New Mexico, Wheeler Peak. We will also bike through the mountain towns of Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Red River and Mora.
We will travel into the archaeologically rich Bandelier National Monument. Here we have the time to spend a half day hiking in the old and well preserved ruins, if you desire. This monument serves a dual purpose of housing one of the largest concentrations of archaeological sites in the Southwest as well as preserving 23,000 acres of mostly forested wilderness. Ancestral Pueblo ruins date to the pre-Spanish period. We will also bike through the well known cities of Albuquerque, Taos and Santa Fe. Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico. Santa Fe is not only the state capital but also the oldest capital in the U.S.
D. H. Lawrence wrote: "I think the skyline of Taos the most beautiful of all I have ever seen in my travels around the world."
We will visit the better known Northern Division of Coronado National Monument. This monument consists of some of the original attempts to convert Native Americans to Christianity.
On our last day, we will bike to the summit of Sandia Crest (10,678 feet above sea level). From the summit of this isolated mountain peak, you can look down upon a magnificent panoramic view of Albuquerque perched next to the mountain's base. From the crest, it's an easy trip down the mountain back to our starting point in Albuquerque.

Off Day
Our off day is spent nestled between the Rio Grande and the Sangre De Cristo Mountains in Taos. Explore the areas abounding with old Spanish architectural structures. Since the turn of the century, Taos has been enticing artists and inspiring their works. More art galleries per capita exist here than any other U.S. city. Kit Carson's home and grave are preserved in Taos. While on our off day in Taos, we will be able to shop for art produced by the local artists or for any other mementos to help you remember the trip. Also visit Taos Pueblo, an old original section still remaining in Taos.
