Trip #22 East San Juan
Trip 21 and Trip 22 are scheduled so they may be biked sequentially. On the July trip you may elect to bike only Trip 21 or only Trip 22 or both back to back, depending on your time constraints. The May trip does not connect with Trip 21.
Those cyclists participating in both trips will have an option day in Durango on Sunday July 9. Four suggested options to choose from in Durango are:
1. Shopping or sightseeing in Durango
2. Whitewater rafting (peak of whitewater season)
3. Narrow gauge round-trip train ride to Silverton
4. Horseback riding
The scenery on this trip is outstanding as you bike through the snow-capped San Juan Mountains (the largest range in Colorado) and the Collegiate Range, many of which are over 14,000 feet in elevation.
You will also bike along the headwaters of the Rio Grande River for a half day. Other interesting sights include waterfalls and beautiful lakes, one of which is the largest in Colorado. You will spend one night at a hotel with a hot springs available. There are several different hot pools with signs denoting the temperature of each pool; therefore, you can relax in the pool with temperatures suited to your preference. On this mountainous trip, your group will spend two nights at a bed and breakfast in Salida and one night in modern cabins along the bank of the Taylor River. You will hear the relaxing sound of the rushing river just outside your cabin window.
The major climbs of this trip are Grand Mesa Mountain at 10,851 feet, Cottonwood Pass at 12,126, Monarch Pass at 11,312 feet, Slumgullion Pass at 11,361 feet, Spring Creek Pass at 10,898 feet and Wolf Creek Pass at 10, 857 feet.
The off day in Salida may be spent rafting the Arkansas River. There is a Class II beginner's section, a Class III/IV section for the more adventurous and a Class V section for advanced rafters. All of these trips are less than an hours drive from Salida and the rafting company will shuttle you to and from the
river.
