Trip #3 Bryce/Zion
Do not be fooled by the total mileage of this trip as it's mostly downhill. We start at the highest point on the route over 10,000 feet and bike downhill or on flat terrain for over 155 miles. The trip total mileage is 190 miles.
Most of our bike travels on this trip will be spent in or around Bryce Canyon National Park, Zion Canyon National Park, and Cedar Breaks National Monument, all of which are full of excellent hiking trails and overlooks, accessible from the bike route. From these overlooks you can view the wonderous splendors of these famous landmarks.
On the first day, we will bike past Panguitch Lake and thru Red Rock Canyon before arriving at the edge of Bryce Canyon National Park. At Panguitch Lake we can look for many eagles soaring overhead. In Red Rock Canyon one can stop and take a short hike. Be sure to take along your camera in Red Rock Canyon, since this little known roadside stop offers some of the most vivid colors and shapes on the trip.
The second day is an off day which can be spent visiting Bryce; biking, hiking, or relaxing. The dominant features of Bryce Canyon National Park are the multi-colored unique rock formations. These formations were created by erosion. Colors include pink, red, cream, with lesser coloring of green, orange, yellow and violet. We then bike toward Zion National Park.
On one of our biking days we visit Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. The dunes in this park are created by pink sandstone blown north from Arizona into Utah and deposited as pink sand dunes. Another unusual sight which we will bike to and take a narrated tour of is Moqui Indian Cave. This is an ancient cave used by the Moqui, later Hopi Indians. Also in this cave is a large collection of luminescent minerals and the largest collection of dinosaur track in the Southwest. We will visit the famous movie town of Kanab where more western movies were made than any area other than Hollywood.
The last day and half is spent visiting Zion National Park. The unique mountain formations of Zion National Park have created fantastic opportunities for hiking trails on some of the most varied topography with panoramic views unsurpassed in the world. A few of the trails are hewn from solid rock cliff faces with cables for hand rails necessitated by the narrow steep cliffs these trails traverse.>
